Van Alstyne Police Department Launches Project ChildSafe

The program will provide 100 gunlocks safety kits for local residents. The Van Alstyne Police Department announces the start of Project ChildSafe a statewide firearms safety and free gunlocks program.  Chief Spindle states, "Project ChildSafe, which is funded through a grant from the Governor's Criminal Justice Division, will distribute more than one million gun lock safety kits to law enforcement agencies throughout the state.  The Van Alstyne Police Department has received 100 gunlock safety kits to be distributed free of charge to residents in the Van Alstyne community."

The lock, which works like a traditional bicycle cable lock, is threaded through the firearm's action, rendering the firearm
inoperable.  The locks are intended to promote safe handling and secure storage practice among all firearms owners. Chief Spindle believes that the cable gunlocks and along with responsible firearm owners educating their children about safety and danger of firearm will help prevent accidental injuries and deaths.  The gunlocks can be used on most types of firearms, including handguns, rifles, and shotguns.  Chief Spindle urges local residents to take advantage of this opportunity to pick up the free gunlocks and use them to secure their firearms.

According to Chief Spindle, Project ChildSafe is a program slated to run 5 years.  We have been advised by the Governor's Criminal Justice Division that this is a 5 year program and when needed we can request more gunlocks.  I'm looking forward to calling the Criminal Justice Division Grant office and requesting more gunlocks for then I will know the children of our community are safe.

When asked of the problems and recent recall of the cable gunlocks as seen on TV and Radio, Chief Spindle stated, "Project ChildSafe was intended to start in September 2000, but was postponed due to the recall.  I'm very confident that the problem has been corrected for the State of Texas would not have shipped the gunlocks nor would they be actively supporting the program with grant money."
