Lt. Tim Barnes was born in Dallas, TX and graduated from North Mesquite High School in 1990.  He attended Eastfield College and majored in Criminal Justice. Lt. Barnes became interested in law enforcement through family members who were in the field. He graduated from the Mesquite Police Academy in 1992 and started his career with the Van Alstyne Police Department. In 1993, Lt. Barnes attended the Drug Enforcement Agency's Narcotic School in Odessa, TX and was at the time, the youngest officer to attend in the United States. He is also a certified K-9 handler and was awarded the K-9 Officer of the Year in 1995. Lt. Barnes was promoted to Corporal in 1997,to Sergeant in 1998 and Lieutenant in 2005.  His hobbies include hunting, water skiing, and working with computers.
